Libertad (Onza) Question !!!

Hi,

I have seen 2 different variants of the Onzas.
From 1992 and 1993.

They have different text ONZA - OnZa
And also the rim is different.
On the OnZa variant the edge is Reeded.
On the ONZA it has the "Independencia y Libertad" text.

These are links to pics of the 2 variants.
http://www.muenzauktion.com/knopik/pic/090827048bz.jpg
http://www.apmex.com/Product/10213/1...irculated.aspx

So, is the ""OnZa variants a fake/copy?
Or have they been making different kinds?

I have both types, and they have exactly the same dimensions and weight.
The OnZa type has a more matte finish.

Re: Libertad (Onza) Question !!!

It was just a design change is all.

Im a very big fan of libertads now specifically because I saw the inscription INDEPENDENCE AND LIBERTY on the edge.

I have plans to make a nice size horde of them.

Good stuff.:ok:

There is a thread on here somewhere that goes into great detail about the different designs and corresponding years...tried to find it but got a strange security token message?!?!?

That would be nice if we could find that thread, is it old?

Re: Libertad (Onza) Question !!!

I think that the Libertad design change started with the 1996 Libertad (Onza). The last year of the "earlier" design (with the Angel facing you directly) was in 1995. I like the second design (with the Angel facing sideways) much better than the earlier design.

No, we are talking about different designs on the onzas (pre 1996).

The 1996 design change is easy to spot :ok:

Oops!! Sorry about that. :signs14:

I am not familiar with the different designs on the pre-1996 onzas. :signs14:

EDIT: Looking at the links that you provided. I also noticed that difference. I do not know why that is different. :dontknow:

I agree the design is much more crisp but I soooooooo wish they would have left the motto on the side.

It would have been a highly coveted coin.

A pretty bad one at that too :confused_ma:
But since I had the pics and I did it, I thought I'd share it.
Just uploaded the pics to an internet service that makes the animation from the pics.

It's manageable if you stick with the bare breasted woman series.

Re: Libertad (Onza) Question !!!

I currently have a 2005 1-oz silver Mexican Libertad coin but I paid a low premium over spot silver at a coin show earlier this year. The newer design (1996-current year) looks better, however the newer design silver Libertads had a huge premium over spot silver based on some prices that I have seen online (except for APMEX) and offline but if you can buy one at a coin show for less than $2 over spot , then that is considered a good deal IMO. I have also seen in the past that early '80's Mexican Libertads (Onzas) seem to have a much lower premium over spot silver than the newer design Libertads. Just an observation on my part.

The margin on the buy/sell price is rather strange here. At the moment, Banco Azteca has the following buy/sell prices quoted: 197/230 which is a difference of 40 pesos, roughly $3USD.

http://www.bancoazteca.com.mx/Portal...ataLibertad.do

Banamex has a much smaller variance of 230/240 pesos.

http://www.banamex.com.mx/esp/finanz...s/divisas.html

In real life, Banamex branches only occasionally may have a few Libertades that someone has cashed in, but they will buy everything one takes them at their quoted buy price.

On the other hand, Banco Azteca always has almost as many as one wants to buy on hand. And, they advertise the availability. They also buy, but at their lower price.

Banco Azteca has a "service" they offer of holding all the Libertades you want to buy, and you can borrow any amount of fiat pesos you want against the amount of silver they are "holding" for you. Yeah, sure...:4_1_72:

I think the first time Mexico produced a Troy Ounce coin was in the very late 40's and they only have a modest premium over spot as a numismatic collectable. Beautiful coin, with an antique coin press on one side, as I remember.

Mexico has a long history of its people trusting in gold and silver, however, in general, the people here are rather complacent about the status quo and many save their fiat pesos in a bank acccount for that measly little interest percentage. Excepting of course, the people who I know personally who have caught on to the truth of all fiat currencies.

One good friend doesn't care much for silver, but I wish I could buy all the Hidalgos and Aztecas he buys every week.:36_1_32v:

In keeping with the original question, yes, there are some variations, but one thing that doesn't vary is the ching-ching-ching as they stack up.

Re: Libertad (Onza) Question !!!

Be careful not to pay too much for earlier year libertads'/Onzas' that aare stamped .925 and .720 fine silver vs. .999 fs.

Less pure Onzas' also contain 1 oz. of silver but are much less desirable (liquid) than later-year .999 fine coins.

i was in Tijuana this summer. i didn't get kidnapped & came home with 2 kidneys ! :36_3_16:

i went to Banamex first, no silver.

then Bank Azteca, not because of inside knowledge, just because i wanted to follow through & get some silver. bought 4 ounces for $17 an ounce, $2 over spot at the time.

I did not want to click that link since I know that the dealer prices in Europe are mostly outrageous.
I did click, it sucks, just like I knew it would.
The price probably contains a significant amount of sales tax for the gubbermint.
